Linux Kernel up to 4.18.5 drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c cdrom_ioctl_drive_status Kernel Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.18.5. The affected element is the function cdrom_ioctl_drive_status of the file drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c. This manipulation causes information disclosure (Kernel Memory). This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2018-16658. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.18.5 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function cdrom_ioctl_drive_status of the file drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 4.18.6. An information leak in cdrom_ioctl_drive_status in drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c could be used by local attackers to read kernel memory because a cast from unsigned long to int interferes with bounds checking. This is similar to CVE-2018-10940.

The bug was discovered 08/29/2018. The weakness was published 09/07/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-16658 since 09/07/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117769 (Oracle Linux 6 / 7 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2018-4227)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157820 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2018-4245)).

Upgrading to version 4.18.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (117769) and SecurityFocus (BID 105334†). Similar entries are available at VDB-105729, VDB-113848 and VDB-120538. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
