Details
A vulnerability was found in Drools Workbench (unknown version). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Drools Workbench contains a path traversal vulnerability. The vulnerability allows a remote, authenticated attacker to bypass the directory restrictions and retrieve arbitrary files from the affected host.
The bug was discovered 11/28/2016. The weakness was presented 09/10/2018 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-7041 since 08/23/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 651 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
