A vulnerability was found in Mgetty up to 1.2.0. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function strcpy of the file contrib/next-login/login.c. The manipulation of the argument username as part of a Parameter leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. An issue was discovered in mgetty before 1.2.1. In contrib/next-login/login.c, the command-line parameter username is passed unsanitized to strcpy(), which can cause a stack-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2018. The weakness was published 09/13/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at x41-dsec.de. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-16743 since 09/09/2018.
