A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mgetty up to 1.2.0. This affects the function fax_notify_mail of the file faxrec.c. The manipulation of the argument mail_to as part of a Parameter leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. An issue was discovered in mgetty before 1.2.1. In fax_notify_mail() in faxrec.c, the mail_to parameter is not sanitized. It could allow for command injection if untrusted input can reach it, because popen is used.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2018. The weakness was released 09/13/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at x41-dsec.de. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-16744 since 09/09/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Upgrading to version 1.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
