Details
A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF 4.0.9 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function multiply_ms of the file tools/ppm2tiff.c. The manipulation as part of a Image File leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in LibTIFF 4.0.9. There is a int32 overflow in multiply_ms in tools/ppm2tiff.c, which can cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted image file.
The bug was discovered 09/07/2018. The weakness was presented 09/16/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.maptools.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-17100 since 09/16/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
