Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.18.11 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function proc_pid_stack of the file fs/proc/base.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in the proc_pid_stack function in fs/proc/base.c in the Linux kernel through 4.18.11. It does not ensure that only root may inspect the kernel stack of an arbitrary task, allowing a local attacker to exploit racy stack unwinding and leak kernel task stack contents.
The bug was discovered 09/27/2018. The weakness was presented 10/03/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-17972 since 10/03/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118160 (Fedora 27 : kernel / kernel-headers / kernel-tools (2018-2ee3411cb8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197306 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-aws, Linux-kvm, Linux-raspi2, Linux-snapdragon Vulnerabilities (USN-3821-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
