Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Cisco Wireless LAN Controller 4.0/5.0/6.0/7.0 (Wireless LAN Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component WebAuth Login. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) devices 7.0 before 7.0.250.0, 7.2, 7.3, and 7.4 before 7.4.110.0 do not properly deallocate memory, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (reboot) by sending WebAuth login requests at a high rate, aka Bug ID CSCuf52361.
The weakness was shared 03/05/2014 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20140305-wlc as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0701 since 01/02/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by creating a large number of WebAuth requests at a high rate and leave them in an uncompleted state. An exploit could allow the attacker to consume all available memory on the device. This causes a watchdog process to restart the WLC, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) while the device reboots.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at tools.cisco.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73018 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (cisco-sa-20140305-wlc)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38638 (Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Multiple Vulnerabilities.).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at tools.cisco.com. Applying the patch cisco-sa-20140305-wlc is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at tools.cisco.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
