Git up to 2.19.0 Clone URL input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Git up to 2.19.0. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Clone Handler. The manipulation of the argument URL with the input -<string> leads to input validation. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-17456. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Git up to 2.19.0 (Versioning Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Clone Handler. The manipulation of the argument URL with the input value -<string> leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Git before 2.14.5, 2.15.x before 2.15.3, 2.16.x before 2.16.5, 2.17.x before 2.17.2, 2.18.x before 2.18.1, and 2.19.x before 2.19.1 allows remote code execution during processing of a recursive "git clone" of a superproject if a .gitmodules file has a URL field beginning with a '-' character.

The bug was discovered 10/06/2018. The weakness was shared 10/06/2018 by joernchen and Jeff King (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-17456 since 09/25/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The advisory points out:

When running "git clone --recurse-submodules", Git parses the supplied .gitmodules file for a URL field and blindly passes it as an argument to a "git clone" subprocess. If the URL field is set to a string that begins with a dash, this "git clone" subprocess interprets the URL as an option. This can lead to executing an arbitrary script shipped in the superproject as the user who ran "git clone".

A public exploit has been developed by Junio C Hamano and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118059 (Slackware 14.0 / 14.1 / 14.2 / current : git (SSA:2018-283-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371705 (Atlassian Sourcetree Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 2.14.5, 2.15.3, 2.16.5, 2.17.2, 2.18.1 or 2.19.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (45548), Tenable (118059) and SecurityFocus (BID 105523†). The entries VDB-131481, VDB-131482 and VDB-131483 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
