Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Atlassian SourceTree up to 3.1.0 on MacOS. This affects an unknown function of the component Mercurial Repository Handler. The manipulation as part of a Filename leads to a argument injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-88. The product constructs a string for a command to be executed by a separate component
in another control sphere, but it does not properly delimit the
intended arguments, options, or switches within that command string. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
There was an argument injection vulnerability in Atlassian Sourcetree for macOS from version 1.2 before version 3.1.1 via filenames in Mercurial repositories. A remote attacker with permission to commit to a Mercurial repository linked in Sourcetree for macOS is able to exploit this issue to gain code execution on the system.
The bug was discovered 02/20/2019. The weakness was released 03/08/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at jira.atlassian.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-20234 since 12/19/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371705 (Atlassian Sourcetree Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 105523†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-124949, VDB-131482 and VDB-131483. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
