A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick 7.0.8-13 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function ReadBMPImage of the file coders/bmp.c of the component BMP File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. In ImageMagick 7.0.8-13 Q16, there is an infinite loop in the ReadBMPImage function of the coders/bmp.c file. Remote attackers could leverage this vulnerability to cause a denial of service via a crafted bmp file.
The bug was discovered 10/05/2018. The weakness was published 10/07/2018 by Venustech with Adlab of Venustech (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-18024 since 10/07/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
