Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function qemu_deliver_packet_iov of the file net/net.c. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
qemu_deliver_packet_iov in net/net.c in Qemu accepts packet sizes greater than INT_MAX, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact.
The bug was discovered 10/08/2018. The weakness was released 10/09/2018 by Jason Wang (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-17963 since 10/03/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118491 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : xen (SUSE-SU-2018:3490-1) (Foreshadow)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171690 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2018:3490-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (118491) and SecurityFocus (BID 105556†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-122910, VDB-123007, VDB-123008 and VDB-123009. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
