A vulnerability was found in Facebook WhatsApp Messenger on iOS/Android (Messaging Software) (affected version unknown). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component RTP Packet Handler. The manipulation as part of a Video Call leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is availability.
The weakness was shared 10/10/2018 with Google Project Zero as Issue 1654 as confirmed bug report (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.chromium.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Natashenka in C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at bugs.chromium.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Threema, Signal or Telegram as an alternative.
