Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32/2.6.34/3.10/3.11/3.13 (Operating System). This affects the function sctp_sf_do_5_1D_ce of the file net/sctp/sm_statefuns.c of the component SCTP Handhshake Handler. The manipulation as part of a COOKIE_ECHO leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The sctp_sf_do_5_1D_ce function in net/sctp/sm_statefuns.c in the Linux kernel through 3.13.6 does not validate certain auth_enable and auth_capable fields before making an sctp_sf_authenticate call, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via an SCTP handshake with a modified INIT chunk and a crafted AUTH chunk before a COOKIE_ECHO chunk.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was shared 03/06/2014 by Nokia Siemens Networks with Nokia as [SCTP]: Implement the receive and verification of AUTH chunk as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0101 since 12/03/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1554 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73243 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2014-3016)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167228 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0807-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13945.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91626), Tenable (73243), SecurityFocus (BID 65943†), Secunia (SA59216†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43453†). Further details are available at bugzilla.redhat.com. The entries VDB-11302, VDB-11755, VDB-12214 and VDB-12411 are related to this item.
