Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11.2 PreBoot Service path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11.2 (Policy Management Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component PreBoot Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the PreBoot service in Novell ZENworks Configuration Management (ZCM) 11.2 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a preboot update pathname, aka ZDI-CAN-1595.

The weakness was published 02/28/2014 by Mak Kolybabi as 7014663 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at novell.com. The public release has been coordinated with Novell. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3706 since 05/30/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72814 (Novell ZENworks Configuration Management < 11.3.0.35304 PreBoot Service Directory Traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 11.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at download.novell.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13995.
