Double free vulnerability in qedit.dll in DirectShow in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted JPEG image, aka "DirectShow Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 03/11/2014 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS14-013 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via iDefense Labs. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0301 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72931 (MS14-013: Vulnerability in Microsoft DirectShow Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2929961)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90946 (Microsoft Windows DirectShow Arbitrary Memory Overwrite Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-013)).
Applying the patch MS14-013 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13788.
