Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU up to 3.0.0 (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component NE2000 NIC Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Qemu emulator <= 3.0.0 built with the NE2000 NIC emulation support is vulnerable to an integer overflow, which could lead to buffer overflow issue. It could occur when receiving packets over the network. A user inside guest could use this flaw to crash the Qemu process resulting in DoS.
The bug was discovered 10/08/2018. The weakness was presented 10/16/2018 by Jason Wang (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-10839 since 05/09/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119216 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS / 18.10 : qemu vulnerabilities (USN-3826-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176528 (Debian Security Update for qemu (DSA 4338-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (119216) and SecurityFocus (BID 105556†). See VDB-123374, VDB-125149, VDB-125150 and VDB-125151 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
