A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9/10 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality. Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was published 03/11/2014 by Bo Qu, Zhibin Hu and Anil Aphale with Palo Alto Networks as MS14-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0314 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1456 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72930 (MS14-012: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2925418)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100180 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-012)).
Applying the patch MS14-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13693.
