The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The ptmx_get_ioctl function in the ARM kernel in Apple iOS before 7.1 and Apple TV before 6.1 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds memory access and device crash) via a crafted call.

The weakness was disclosed 03/11/2014 as HT6162 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1278 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Andy Davis and been published 6 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72962 (Apple TV < 6.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91709), Exploit-DB (32333), Tenable (72962), SecurityFocus (BID 54270†) and OSVDB (104273†).
