Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle Fujitsu M10-1, Fujitsu M10-4, Fujitsu M10-4S, Fujitsu M12-1, Fujitsu M12-2 and Fujitsu M12-2S and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component XCP Firmware. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 09/14/2016. The weakness was disclosed 10/16/2018 by Daniel Stenberg as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2018 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7167 since 09/08/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/29/2023).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 23 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94572 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : curl (SUSE-SU-2016:2714-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176814 (Debian Security Update for curl (DLA 1568-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94572) and SecurityFocus (BID 95019†). The entries VDB-90449, VDB-91385, VDB-91680 and VDB-91681 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
