Oracle SPARC Enterprise M9000 XCP Firmware integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Oracle SPARC Enterprise M3000, SPARC Enterprise M4000, SPARC Enterprise M5000, SPARC Enterprise M8000 and SPARC Enterprise M9000. It has been classified as very critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component XCP Firmware. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 09/14/2016. The weakness was presented 10/16/2018 by Daniel Stenberg as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2018 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oracle.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-7167 since 09/08/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 05/29/2023).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 23 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94572 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : curl (SUSE-SU-2016:2714-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176814 (Debian Security Update for curl (DLA 1568-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94572) and SecurityFocus (BID 92975†). See VDB-90449, VDB-91385, VDB-91680 and VDB-91681 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
