Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.1.0i/1.1.1 (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component ECDSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a key management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-320. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The OpenSSL ECDSA signature algorithm has been shown to be vulnerable to a timing side channel attack. An attacker could use variations in the signing algorithm to recover the private key. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.0j (Affected 1.1.0-1.1.0i). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1a (Affected 1.1.1).
The bug was discovered 10/29/2018. The weakness was disclosed 10/28/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.openssl.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-0735 since 11/29/2017. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600.001 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118496 (FreeBSD : OpenSSL -- Multiple vulnerabilities in 1.1 branch (238ae7de-dba2-11e8-b713-b499baebfeaf)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176538 (Debian Security Update for openssl (DSA 4348-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.0j or 1.1.1a eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
