Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.2p/1.1.0i/1.1.1 (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component DSA Signature Handler. The manipulation as part of a Timing leads to a key management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-320. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The OpenSSL DSA signature algorithm has been shown to be vulnerable to a timing side channel attack. An attacker could use variations in the signing algorithm to recover the private key. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1a-dev (Affected 1.1.1). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.0j-dev (Affected 1.1.0-1.1.0i). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2q-dev (Affected 1.0.2-1.0.2p).
The bug was discovered 10/30/2018. The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.openssl.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-0734 since 11/29/2017. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600.001 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118496 (FreeBSD : OpenSSL -- Multiple vulnerabilities in 1.1 branch (238ae7de-dba2-11e8-b713-b499baebfeaf)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176538 (Debian Security Update for openssl (DSA 4348-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.2q-dev, 1.1.0j-dev or 1.1.1a-dev eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (118496) and SecurityFocus (BID 105758†). The entries VDB-126017, VDB-126937, VDB-127258 and VDB-127262 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
