A vulnerability was found in Apple watchOS up to 5.0.1 (Smartwatch Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component CoreCrypto. The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-4398 since 01/02/2018. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
An issue existed in the method for determining prime numbers. This issue was addressed by using pseudorandom bases for testing of primes.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118573 (macOS and Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2018-005)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371294 (Apple iTunes for Windows Prior to 12.9.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT209197)).
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
