A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.14.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component EFI. The bug was discovered 05/21/2018. The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2018 by Jann Horn with Google Project Zero as HT209193 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-3639. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
An information disclosure issue was addressed with a microcode update. This ensures that older data read from recently-written-to addresses cannot be read via a speculative side-channel.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111304 (Photon OS 2.0 : linux-esx / linux / patch / linux-aws / linux-secure (PhotonOS-PHSA-2018-2.0-0049) (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family PhotonOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371045 (F5 BIG-IP ASM Multiple Vulnerabilitites (K24578092,K29146534,K51801290,K93472064)).
Upgrading to version 10.14.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
