Mozilla Firefox before 28.0 on Android allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and access arbitrary file: URLs via vectors involving the "Open Link in New Tab" menu selection.
The weakness was presented 03/18/2014 by Alex Inführ with OUSPG as MFSA2014-21 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1501 since 01/16/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at mozilla.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73111 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (610de647-af8d-11e3-a25b-b4b52fce4ce8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166815 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2014:0418-1)). The advisory illustrates:
[O]n Firefox for Android it is possible to open links to local files from web content by selecting "Open Link in New Tab" from the context menu using the file: protocol. The web content would have to know the precise location of a malicious local file in order to exploit this issue.
Upgrading to version 28 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
