FreeType 2.5/2.5.1/2.5.2 cff/cf2ft.c input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeType 2.5/2.5.1/2.5.2 (Software Library) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function cf2_initLocalRegionBuffer/cf2_initGlobalRegionBuffer of the file cff/cf2ft.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The (1) cf2_initLocalRegionBuffer and (2) cf2_initGlobalRegionBuffer functions in cff/cf2ft.c in FreeType before 2.5.3 do not properly check if a subroutine exists, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure), as demonstrated by a crafted ttf file.

The weakness was presented 03/12/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk (j00ru) as Re: Two stack-based issues in freetype [NOT a request] (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2241 since 02/28/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73076 (Ubuntu 13.10 : freetype vulnerabilities (USN-2148-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123092 (Fedora Security Update for mingw-freetype (FEDORA-2014-17580)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.savannah.gnu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92085), Tenable (73076), SecurityFocus (BID 66292†), Secunia (SA57447†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43725†).
