Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function get_rx_bufs of the file drivers/vhost/net.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The get_rx_bufs function in drivers/vhost/net.c in the vhost-net subsystem in the Linux kernel package before 2.6.32-431.11.2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 does not properly handle vhost_get_vq_desc errors, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS crash) via unspecified vectors.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was shared 03/27/2014 with Red Hat as Bug 1062577 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0055 since 12/03/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1574 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73222 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2014-3015)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350400 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2014-328).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at patchwork.ozlabs.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92091), Tenable (73222), SecurityFocus (BID 66441†), Secunia (SA59386†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43761†).
