Linux Kernel up to 3.13 Long Packet drivers/vhost/net.c handle_rx out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel 3.2/3.4/3.10/3.12/3.13. The impacted element is the function handle_rx of the file drivers/vhost/net.c of the component Long Packet Handler. The manipulation leads to input validation. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2014-0077. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.2/3.4/3.10/3.12/3.13 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function handle_rx of the file drivers/vhost/net.c of the component Long Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

drivers/vhost/net.c in the Linux kernel before 3.13.10, when mergeable buffers are disabled, does not properly validate packet lengths, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and host OS crash) or possibly gain privileges on the host OS via crafted packets, related to the handle_rx and get_rx_bufs functions.

The weakness was presented 04/04/2014 by Michael S. Tsirkin with Red Hat as Bug 1064440 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0077 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74214 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-2226-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350400 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2014-328).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92332), Tenable (74214), SecurityFocus (BID 66678†), Secunia (SA57740†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43927†).
