Wireshark up to 2.6.4 Dissection Engine epan/tvbuff_composite.c out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 2.6.4 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown functionality of the file epan/tvbuff_composite.c of the component Dissection Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Wireshark 2.6.0 to 2.6.4 and 2.4.0 to 2.4.10, the dissection engine could crash. This was addressed in epan/tvbuff_composite.c by preventing a heap-based buffer over-read.

The bug was discovered 11/27/2018. The weakness was released 11/29/2018 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-19625 since 11/28/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119892 (Debian DSA-4359-1 : wireshark - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171793 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2018:4298-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (119892) and SecurityFocus (BID 106051†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-127309, VDB-127308, VDB-127310 and VDB-127312. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
