A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wavpack up to 5.1.0. This issue affects the function WavpackPackInit of the file pack_utils.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. The function WavpackPackInit in pack_utils.c in libwavpack.a in WavPack through 5.1.0 allows attackers to cause a denial-of-service (resource exhaustion caused by an infinite loop) via a crafted wav audio file because WavpackSetConfiguration64 mishandles a sample rate of zero.
The bug was discovered 11/26/2018. The weakness was shared 12/04/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-19840 since 12/03/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction.
