Amazon Web Services FreeRTOS Protocol Checksum Generator usGenerateProtocolChecksum/prvProcessIPPacket memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Amazon Web Services FreeRTOS, FreeRTOS and WITTENSTEIN WHIS Connect Middleware (Middleware) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function usGenerateProtocolChecksum/prvProcessIPPacket of the component Protocol Checksum Generator. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Amazon Web Services (AWS) FreeRTOS through 1.3.1, FreeRTOS up to V10.0.1 (with FreeRTOS+TCP), and WITTENSTEIN WHIS Connect middleware TCP/IP component allow remote attackers to leak information or execute arbitrary code because of a Buffer Overflow during generation of a protocol checksum in usGenerateProtocolChecksum and prvProcessIPPacket.

The bug was discovered 10/18/2018. The weakness was presented 12/06/2018 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-16526 since 09/05/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
