A vulnerability has been found in Amazon Web Services FreeRTOS, FreeRTOS and WITTENSTEIN WHIS Connect Middleware (Middleware) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function prvParseDNSReply of the component DNS LLMNR Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Amazon Web Services (AWS) FreeRTOS through 1.3.1, FreeRTOS up to V10.0.1 (with FreeRTOS+TCP), and WITTENSTEIN WHIS Connect middleware TCP/IP component allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or leak information because of a Buffer Overflow during parsing of DNS\LLMNR packets in prvParseDNSReply.
The bug was discovered 10/18/2018. The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-16525 since 09/05/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
