The XML parser in Microsoft Office 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, and 2013, and Office for Mac 2011, does not properly detect recursion during entity expansion, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and persistent application hang) via a crafted XML document containing a large number of nested entity references, as demonstrated by a crafted text/plain e-mail message to Outlook, a similar issue to CVE-2003-1564.

The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was presented 04/08/2014 by Lubomir Stroetmann with softScheck GmbH as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-2730 since 04/05/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2622 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The posting contains the following remark:

softScheck reported the vulnerability to Microsoft. Microsoft confirmed the issue, however, it does not meet their definition of a security vulnerability. Microsoft promises to address the issue in a future version of Outlook. Effective protection against the vulnerability can be achieved by adding a rule blocking XML DTD Entities ("<!ENTITY", case-insensitive) to your spam filter. Creating an Outlook rule to permanently delete messages containing "<!ENTITY" also mitigates the attack.
