A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Word 2007/2010 (Word Processing Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Office File Handler. Microsoft Word 2007 SP3 and 2010 SP1 and SP2, and Office Compatibility Pack SP3, allocates memory incorrectly for file conversions from a binary (aka .doc) format to a newer format, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted document, aka "Microsoft Office File Format Converter Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 04/08/2014 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as MS14-017 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1757 since 01/29/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73413 (MS14-017: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2949660)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121860 (Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-017)).
Applying the patch MS14-017 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
