Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.18.10 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function ipddp_ioctl of the file drivers/net/appletalk/ipddp.c. The manipulation as part of a IOCTL Call leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Address). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 4.18.11. The ipddp_ioctl function in drivers/net/appletalk/ipddp.c allows local users to obtain sensitive kernel address information by leveraging CAP_NET_ADMIN to read the ipddp_route dev and next fields via an SIOCFINDIPDDPRT ioctl call.
The bug was discovered 09/13/2018. The weakness was shared 12/27/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-20511 since 12/27/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 105 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121505 (Slackware 14.2 : Slackware 14.2 kernel (SSA:2019-030-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176773 (Debian Security Update for linux (DLA 1731-2)).
Upgrading to version 4.18.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
