The weakness was presented 04/08/2014 by Stefan Kanthak as MS14-019 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0315 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/10/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1574 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73416 (MS14-019: Vulnerability in Windows File Handling Component Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2922229)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90948 (Microsoft Windows File Handling Component Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-019)).
Applying the patch MS14-019 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 14004.
