A vulnerability was found in WordPress up to 3.7.1/3.8.1 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function wp_validate_auth_cookie of the file wp-includes/pluggable.php of the component Authentication Cookies Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. The wp_validate_auth_cookie function in wp-includes/pluggable.php in WordPress before 3.7.2 and 3.8.x before 3.8.2 does not properly determine the validity of authentication cookies, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain access via a forged cookie.
The weakness was released 04/08/2014 by Jon Cave (edik) with WordPress Security Team as WordPress 3.8.2 Security Release as confirmed news (Website). The advisory is available at wordpress.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0166 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
By approaching the search of inurl:wp-includes/pluggable.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. Upgrading to version 3.7.2, 3.8.2 or 3.9rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wordpress.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
