A vulnerability was found in WordPress up to 3.7.1/3.8.1 (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Plupload. The manipulation of the argument publish_post with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. WordPress before 3.7.2 and 3.8.x before 3.8.2 allows remote authenticated users to publish posts by leveraging the Contributor role, related to wp-admin/includes/post.php and wp-admin/includes/class-wp-posts-list-table.php.

The weakness was presented 04/08/2014 by Szymon Gruszecki (edik) as WordPress 3.8.2 Security Release as confirmed news (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wordpress.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0165 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73471 (WordPress < 3.7.2 / 3.8.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
