Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Juniper Junos up to 13.3 on MX/T4000 (Router Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component IP Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Juniper Junos before 11.4R11, 12.1 before 12.1R9, 12.2 before 12.2R7, 12.3R4 before 12.3R4-S3, 13.1 before 13.1R4, 13.2 before 13.2R2, and 13.3 before 13.3R1, as used in MX Series and T4000 routers, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (PFE restart) via a crafted IP packet to certain (1) Trio or (2) Cassis-based Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) modules.

The weakness was disclosed 04/10/2014 as JSA10621 / PR 904887 / KB16765 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.juniper.net. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-2713 since 04/01/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499. The advisory points out:

A crafted IP packet destined to an MX Series or T4000 router utilizing Trio or Cassis-based PFE (Packet Forwarding Engine) modules can cause the PFE to reboot. Affected modules include MPC1, MPC2, MPC3, and MPC4, integrated MPCs (CHAS-MX*), as well as Type 5 FPCs on the T4000. For a complete list of Trio and Cassis-based PFE modules, refer to KB25385.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73495 (Juniper Junos MX and T4000 Series MPC Reboot DoS (JSA10621)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 11.4R11, 12.1R9, 12.2R7, 12.3R4-S3, 12.3R5, 13.1R4, 13.2R2 or and 13.3R1 eliminates this vulnerability.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling All Ports. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92395), Tenable (73495), SecurityFocus (BID 66764†), Secunia (SA57794†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030059†).
