Note that this issue has been misidentified as CVE-2004-2604. J-Web does not use PHProxy, which is a requirement for the vulnerability described by CVE-2004-2604.This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-2712 since 04/01/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of inurl:index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59993 (Juniper Junos J-Web XSS (PSN-2012-07-649)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43392 (Juniper JUNOS J-Web Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability (JSA10521)).
Upgrading to version 10.0S25, 10.4R10, 11.4R11, 12.1R9, 12.1X44-D30, 12.1X45-D20, 12.1X46-D10 or 12.2R1 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable J-Web. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
