A vulnerability has been found in systemd-journald up to v239 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Log Message Handler. An out of bounds read was discovered in systemd-journald in the way it parses log messages that terminate with a colon ':'. A local attacker can use this flaw to disclose process memory data. Versions from v221 to v239 are vulnerable.
The bug was discovered 01/09/2019. The weakness was released 01/11/2019 with Qualys as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-16866 since 09/11/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
