A vulnerability was found in Oracle Java SE and Java SE Embedded 6u71/7u51/8 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component JAXB. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The issue has been introduced in 01/14/2014. The weakness was released 04/15/2014 with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2414 since 03/13/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 91 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73654 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.6.0-openjdk (ALAS-2014-326)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350405 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for java-1.6.0-openjdk: ALAS-2014-326).
