The issue has been introduced in 01/14/2014. The weakness was disclosed 04/15/2014 with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-2402 since 03/13/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 91 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73655 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.7.0-openjdk (ALAS-2014-327)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185086 (HP-UX running Java6, Multiple Vulnerabilities(HPSBUX03092)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
