The issue has been introduced in 01/14/2014. The weakness was disclosed 04/15/2014 with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 91 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73570 (Oracle Java SE Multiple Vulnerabilities (April 2014 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
