Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.1 XUL Local File heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.1 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component XUL Local File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in GIF2.cpp in Firefox before 1.0.2, Mozilla before to 1.7.6, and Thunderbird before 1.0.2, and possibly other applications that use the same library, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a GIF image with a crafted Netscape extension 2 block and buffer size.

The weakness was presented 03/24/2005 by Michael Krax with ISS X-Force as MFSA2005-32 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0399 since 02/14/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 2 years, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at mikx.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19632 (Fedora Core 3 : firefox-1.0.2-1.3.1 (2005-246)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38417 (Mozilla Remote Heap Overflow and Sidebar Panel Script Injection Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6503. In this case the pattern GIF is used for detection.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19269), Tenable (19632), SecurityFocus (BID 12881†), OSVDB (14937†) and Secunia (SA14654†). mikx.de is providing further details.
