A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Netscape Browser up to 7.2. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Netscape Extension. The manipulation as part of a GIF File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Upgrading to version 1.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at netscape.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3534. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3364.
