Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component Netscape Extension. The manipulation as part of a GIF Image leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 03/23/2005 by Mark Dowd with ISS X-Force as MFSA2005-30 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-0399 since 02/14/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19632 (Fedora Core 3 : firefox-1.0.2-1.3.1 (2005-246)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38417 (Mozilla Remote Heap Overflow and Sidebar Panel Script Injection Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6503. In this case the pattern GIF is used for detection.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19269), Tenable (19632), SecurityFocus (BID 12881†), Secunia (SA14654†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-7425†).
