Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple tvOS up to 12.1.1 (Digital Media Player). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/22/2019 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Tencent as HT209447 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-20346 since 12/21/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved input validation.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 48 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121473 (Apple iTunes < 12.9.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371588 (Apple iCloud for Windows Prior to 7.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities(HT209451)).
