Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple tvOS up to 12.1.1 (Digital Media Player). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SQLite 3.25.2, when queries are run on a table with a malformed PRIMARY KEY, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) by leveraging the ability to run arbitrary SQL statements (such as in certain WebSQL use cases).
The bug was discovered 01/22/2019. The weakness was presented 01/22/2019 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Tencent as HT209447 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-20505 since 12/26/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved input validation.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121473 (Apple iTunes < 12.9.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371588 (Apple iCloud for Windows Prior to 7.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities(HT209451)).
Upgrading to version 12.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
