A vulnerability was found in Apple watchOS up to 5.1.2 (Smartwatch Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Kernel. The bug was discovered 01/22/2019. The weakness was disclosed 01/22/2019 by Brandon Azad with Google Project Zero as HT209448 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-6209 since 01/11/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. An out-of-bounds read issue existed that led to the disclosure of kernel memory. This was addressed with improved input validation.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121391 (macOS and Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2019-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371589 (Apple macOS Mojave 10.14.3, Security Update 2019-001 High Sierra, Security Update 2019-001 Sierra Not Installed (HT209446)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
